Ah, gorgeous. Do you know that Puccini sued Al Jolson for plagiarism, when Jolson used this melody for his song "Avalon"? The idea that Puccini and Al Jolson were contemporaries makes something in my head explode.
It is so weird. Puccini we think of as a 19th century figure, but he overlaps also with Kern and Gershwin. I love the way opera folk are so snooty about him too. Poor Puccini. Like Somerset Maugham, the only people he ever made happy were the public.
